The Agriculture and Rural Training (FAR) International Network

A network of expertise supporting the renovation of agricultural and rural training systems in the South

Update : 04/02/2019

The Agriculture and Rural Training (FAR) International Network brings together 16 African countries and over 1,450 people in the North and South involved in the renovation of national agricultural and rural training systems. The network relies on Montpellier SupAgro, a longstanding partner, for high level international expertise to support this dynamic.

The FAR International Network was born in 2006 in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) out of an initiative of a group of agricultural and rural training professionals from different African countries. The actors of the FAR network seek to pool their experiences and expertise to renovate agricultural and rural training systems.

Network activities

To promote exchanges between practitioners, and enrich the South-South expertise of its members, the network regularly calls on agricultural and rural training professionals to carry out renovation projects and ensuing cooperation programmes. The concrete actions undertaken at different levels involve:

  • mobilizing appropriate expertise for the renovation of agricultural and rural training programmes;
  • sharing experiences and producing knowledge about agricultural and rural training systems
  • capacity building among senior staff in agriculture and education ministries; promoting youth projects anchored within a territory.

Strong roots in Montpellier SupAgro

Based within Montpellier SupAgro’s Institute for Higher Education in Tropical and Sub-Tropical Agri-Food Sciences (IRC), the network benefits from the international expertise of Montpellier SupAgro faculty members and engineers from the DEFIS department. The FAR network hosts interns in their second and third year of engineering and master’s programs. It finances and supervises study grants and internships for people from member countries. The FAR network, with the support of Montpellier SupAgro, organizes international events, such as a seminar on anchoring agricultural and rural training facilities within territories that was held in December 2016.
