The Livestock farming systems specialization provides biological, technical and socio-economic knowledge on different forms of livestock farming, ranging from intensive livestock farming in integrated sectors to mobile pastoral systems.

It also trains students in methods for approaching livestock farming, with particular emphasis placed on the systemic approach, a combination of scales of analysis, field data collection and modelling.

    The following subjects are addressed:

    • Livestock systems around the world
    • Pastoralism
    • Livestock farming and territory
    • Hygiene and veterinary health
    • Intensive livestock farming in the South

Part of the curriculum is devoted to the preparation of a literature review and the construction of a research project, basic elements necessary for the pursuit of a PhD. A large part of the training is devoted to individual and team work that lead to presentations and debates.

    Master thesis

The master’s thesis accounts for half of the training programme in the 2nd year, M2 (6 months, 30 ECTS, compulsory). It is based on a 5-6 month internship in a research institution, association or private company in France or abroad. Such experience is intended to reinforce the skills acquired during the first semester and to develop new ones, related to the professional environment (themes and methods) faced by the student, and to the type of livestock farming activities and/or territories investigated.

Many internship offers come through the teaching team’s network. Internship topics chosen by students in previous years have included:

    • Animal feed and digestion
    • Animal health
    • Pastoralism
    • Analysis of agricultural practices
    • Quality of animal products
    • Impact assessment of environmental factors
  • Calendar

    • From 3  Sept. 2021 to 04 March 2022: classes
    • From 7 March 2022: start of the compulsory internship (6 month)
