Objectives

This option aims to give students the scientific knowledge and methodological tools needed to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the sustainable production of biomolecules, materials and alternative fuels using agricultural raw materials.

Themes

  • ecotechnologies, green chemistry
  • Programme

Number of ECTS credits : 60

Language of instruction : In French

The course covers the production and quality control of the raw materials, processing technologies (biological, physical, chemical), tools for studying the environmental impact of sectors, and the analysis of socio-economic sustainability and regulatory frameworks.

This integrated approach is required for the development of sustainable innovation strategies. Graduates should be able to work in one area of a production sector while knowing how to situate their activity within an overall context and work with different sectors (R & D, supply, production, marketing, sales...).

The option is organized jointly with the École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Montpellier (ENSCM) and will involve students from both schools. The course is organized around four fields:

    • Upstream: Master the properties of agricultural raw materials, sustainability of their production.
    • At the core, the biorefinery: Fractionation, microbial and enzymatic bioconversion, clean chemistry, industrial engineering, water and energy management.
    • Downstream: Products and fields of application.
    • In a global approach, socio-economic integration and sector sustainability: Socio-economy of sectors, environmental assessment, production management, management, legislation.

After bringing students from both schools up to speed (September), the course is organized into three main parts: common core (October-December), option period (January-February), and compulsory engineering internship (March-September) in France or abroad.

The course also includes a project conducted in small groups (October-February). The program is largely based on case studies and field visits, and involves the participation of diverse professionals.

  • Admission

The 3rd year option is open, after review by the admissions committee, to students who have validated the M1 level (first year of a master's program) and come from:

    • an international partner institution in the context of academic mobility (earning credits)
    • a school of agriculture under the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food (See Ecole des groupes Ingénieurs) or the Ministry of Higher Education for Research and Innovation
    • or a French institution with which Montpellier SupAgro has signed an agreement

Application forms may be obtained from the educational directorate of your institution.

Students who have not validated the 2nd year (M1) of the Montpellier SupAgro Agricultural Engineer course are not awarded a diploma at the end of the 3rd year of the training program.

    Admissions

  • Careers

The option prepares engineers for various management positions in agribusiness, chemical, and related sectors (eco-assessment, regulatory and institutional monitoring).

Job opportunities include R&D engineer, project coordinator, production management engineer, methods and/or organization engineer, senior manager/manager (procurement, production, quality control, safety and environment, scheduling, logistics, human resources), consulting engineer.

The companies and organizations in which agricultural engineers may work include:

    • R & D units of agribusiness or chemical companies,
    • production units of agro-industrial or chemical companies, service and consultancy companies (value chain and process evaluation),
    • logistics and trading companies working with raw materials and intermediate products,
    • organisations defining guidelines and incentive policies at the regional, national or international level.
